China's new energy vehicle (NEV) ownership reached 16.2 million vehicles by the end of June 2023, accounting for 4.9 percent of the total 328 million vehicles.

This represents an increase of 0.8 percentage points compared to the end of 2022. Data released at the beginning of the year showed that China's NEV ownership stood at 13.1 million at the end of last year, accounting for 4.1 percent of the total vehicle fleet of 319 million.

By the end of June, China had 12.594 million pure electric vehicles, or battery electric vehicles (BEVs), accounting for 77.8 percent of all NEVs.

A record 3.128 million NEVs were registered in the first half of the year, up 41.6 percent year-on-year and accounting for 26.6 percent of the 11.75 million new vehicle registrations.

From January to June, retail sales of new energy passenger vehicles in China rose 36 percent to 3.06 million units.

Retail sales of all passenger vehicles in China from January to June were 9.528 million units, up 3 percent year-on-year.

A total of 88 cities in China have more than 1 million vehicles, 41 cities have more than 2 million and 24 cities have more than 3 million vehicles. Beijing and Chengdu have more than 6 million vehicles, and Chongqing, Shanghai and Suzhou have more than 5 million vehicles.
