It is reported that NIO plans to launch its first hybrid vehicle in 2026, targeting overseas markets such as the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe.
So far, NIO has focused solely on producing electric vehicles. The decision to introduce a hybrid model is mainly to address the challenges Chinese companies face when selling electric vehicles abroad. Markets like Europe have high trade barriers, and the slow development of charging infrastructure has hindered the adoption of electric vehicles.
The decision to develop hybrid vehicles was made based on the advice of a key investor, the Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund CYVN Holdings. NIO plans to use its third brand, "Firefly," to develop range-extended hybrid vehicles, promoting sales in the Middle East, where the infrastructure is not yet ready for widespread electric vehicle adoption. As a result, hybrid vehicles are seen as a more practical option for this market.
The new hybrid model is expected to be launched by the end of 2026, with deliveries starting in 2027. Notably, this model will not be sold in the Chinese market, where NIO will continue to focus on electric vehicles equipped with swappable batteries.
Additionally, NIO will unveil its first "Firefly" brand vehicle at its annual event on December 21. The company aims to enter the European market with this model, which has been designed specifically for European consumers who prefer compact, agile cars. NIO hopes that the "Firefly" brand will further enhance its influence in international markets and provide high-quality mobility solutions to more users.
