On November 14, China marked a historic achievement in its automotive industry: surpassing 10 million new energy vehicles (NEVs). The milestone was celebrated at the “China NEV 10 Million Units Milestone Event” in Wuhan, organized by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers and hosted by Dongfeng Motor Corporation. Government officials, industry leaders, and NEV manufacturers gathered to honor this significant accomplishment and acknowledge everyone who contributed to China’s automotive progress.

Rapid Growth from Follower to Leader

China's NEV industry has transformed dramatically over the past decade. In 2014, President Xi Jinping outlined the vision of making China a leading automotive power, emphasizing the importance of NEVs in achieving this goal. Since then, with strong policy support, innovation, and determination, China has evolved from a participant in the global automotive market to a key driver of green mobility worldwide.

The numbers tell the story: it took 27 years for China to reach its first 10 million NEVs, just 17 months to double that, and less than a year to add another 10 million vehicles. For nine consecutive years, China has led the world in NEV production and sales, showcasing both speed and quality.

The Role of Policy and Innovation

China’s NEV success is underpinned by comprehensive national strategies. Initiatives such as expanding charging infrastructure, implementing subsidies, and fostering technological innovation have created a robust ecosystem. Over the past decade, breakthroughs in core technologies and international collaboration have further strengthened the industry.

Dongfeng Motor Corporation exemplifies this progress. The company has developed advanced technologies, including its "Dragon Engine" and "Mach Engine," and leads the industry in patents. From January to October 2024, Dongfeng sold 700,000 NEVs, an 82.3% year-on-year increase.

At the event, Dongfeng’s premium NEV brand, Voyah, launched its fourth model, the Voyah ZhuYin. This high-end electric SUV features an 800V silicon carbide platform, a range of up to 901 kilometers, and ultra-fast charging, setting a new benchmark for electric SUVs priced around 200,000 yuan. Voyah is also planning to enter the European market, furthering the global reach of Chinese manufacturing.

Driving Global Green Transformation

Industry experts view China’s achievement as a significant step forward in the global transition to electrification and smart mobility. It solidifies China’s position as the world’s top NEV producer and seller while enhancing its leadership in the industry’s green transformation.

Looking ahead, China’s NEV industry is poised to expand further into global markets, driving innovation and setting new standards for sustainable and intelligent transportation. This milestone not only represents high-quality growth but also offers a "China solution" for the global automotive sector.
