FAW Audi has officially announced that the domestic A5L will make its debut at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show and is expected to be launched around mid-2025, with some dealers suggesting a possible July release. Additionally, FAW Audi plans to introduce a new lineup of Audi A5 family models, including the imported A5 Sedan, A5 Avant, S5 Sedan, and S5 Avant. These models will offer both standard and long-wheelbase sedan versions, along with a high-performance variant. Notably, the A5L will replace the current A4L as a new-generation model.
The official statement also revealed that the A5L will collaborate with leading smart driving technology suppliers in China. While there were rumors that the car would feature Huawei’s smart driving technology, the vehicle currently does not come with lidar sensors and is expected to use a purely vision-based smart driving solution.
The A5L is the first model to be built on Audi’s new PPC platform for traditional fuel vehicles, which corresponds to the new PPE platform for electric vehicles. It comes equipped with the latest E3 1.2 electronic architecture, which upgrades the car’s network of functions, including the powertrain, driver assistance systems, and infotainment. This makes the A5L’s level of smart technology similar to that of electric vehicles, laying the groundwork for the potential introduction of Huawei’s smart driving technology.
Unlike the SAIC Audi A5L, which is designed with a more luxurious focus, the FAW Audi A5L features a standard sedan layout but with a sporty design similar to its counterpart. The A5L’s honeycomb grille is accented with a chrome strip, and the front and rear bumpers are more dynamic in design. The car’s matrix LED headlights offer programmable functions with 8 digital light signatures, split into two sections. The digital OLED taillights, which use second-generation technology, allow for vehicle-to-vehicle light communication, improving road safety with features like hazard warnings, accident alerts, and parking reminders. A new "Aurora Purple" color option will also be available for the car.
Inside, the A5L features a three-screen setup, including an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.5-inch central touchscreen, and a 10.9-inch passenger display. The central screen is angled slightly toward the driver, and the physical buttons inside have been greatly reduced to highlight the car’s sporty and tech-focused design. The interior of the domestic model will receive further upgrades.
In terms of performance, the A5L will be powered by the fifth-generation EA888 Evo5 2.0TFSI engine, delivering a maximum output of 150 kW (204 horsepower). This engine features VTG (Variable Turbine Geometry) technology and will be available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations.
